The Tagua nut
The tagua nut is the seed of a palm tree native to the tropical rainforests of South America. "Phytelephas macrocarpa" is the scientific name for this plant, which roughly translates to "plant ivory." The consistency, appearance, and creamy-white color of tagua are very similar to ivory. Tagua is therefore ideal as an animal- and environmentally-friendly substitute for animal ivory. The lightweight nature of the processed "stone nut" is also surprising, and its pliable, warm texture makes the natural material comfortable to wear against the skin.
Fresh tagua nuts have a jelly-like consistency and are dried until they can be processed further for jewelry making. Subsequently, they are ground, cut into shapes, dyed, and polished.
