Upcycling

What does upcycling mean?

What does upcycling actually mean? And why is this trend so successful today? In this article, we answer all your questions about upcycling.

The climate crisis is a very serious issue, as it affects us all. That's why sustainability is so important today. Upcycling can contribute to sustainability because the term means reuse. It involves creating something new from existing material, such as existing clothing. So, waste products are transformed into new, high-quality materials. For this, old materials, finished garments, and fabrics from remnants are used. This extends the life cycle of a raw material and allows it to be used meaningfully. The goal is to keep clothing in circulation for as long as possible and to regenerate it, so that fewer waste products are generated.

The difference between upcycling, recycling, and downcycling

As already described, upcycling means transforming unusable or old clothing into new, high-quality garments. It's about upgrading a product. Recycling, on the other hand, means processing and reusing raw materials that have already been extracted. Downcycling involves a process that leads to a reduction in the quality of the product during reuse.

Want to try upcycling yourself? No problem!

Because today there are many ways to do upcycling yourself. An old fabric, an old piece of clothing - you can use it meaningfully to produce something new. And from that, a special one-of-a-kind item is created. There are a lot of Do It Yourself videos, for example on YouTube, that you can use as a guide. There are also books on upcycling or even so-called repair cafes where sewing machines are available. Let this article inspire you to try upcycling yourself soon.

Contributing to sustainability with upcycling

The large wasteful industry, which is mainly about speed and availability, needs to be countered. This industry is called "Fast Fashion," about which we have already written a blog post. If you would like to read it, you can access it via this link: Fast Fashion - Fast Fashion and its Disadvantages – naturgewand. Almost 11 million tons of fabric end up in landfills every year. In 2018, the global fashion industry generated 2.1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions. So, it is very urgent to do something about it. And one way to do that is upcycling, which many fashion brands already practice. These include, for example, Loewe, Marine Serre, Avenir Berlin, and many more. Now you too can do your part to make a difference. For example, by practicing upcycling yourself, or by shopping from brands that are based on sustainability. However, pay attention to greenwashing. We also have an article on greenwashing if you want to know exactly what it is. Here is the link: Greenwashing – Critically questioning "sustainable" labels! – naturgewand.
